If you are trying to send HTML emails, even with Campaign Monitor or MailChimp, and are noticing that Hotmail is receiving a blank email you may have a problem with your doctype.  You will have to make sure your Doctype is set to XHTML 1.0 strict (not HTML5) if you are sending out emails.  Most clients don’t care, but if you use an HTML5 doctype, Hotmail will not show anything.

It took me a while to figure this out and thought it might help someone.

2 Comments:

  1. How do you know if you’re working with an 1.0 or a HTML5? I created my newsletter is Dreamweaver using a MailChimp template. Only hotmail users are saying it’s blank. Thanks for your help!

  2. The doctype is the bit of code at the top of your template. It is usually set before your opening <html> tag.

This is an HTML5 doctype (notice, much easier):
    < !DOCTYPE html>

This is an XHTML 1.0 Strict doctype:
    < !DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">

You can read about doctypes here: http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_doctype.asp
