Before playing this track, off of October’s “All Things Will Unwind”, you may want to look up your neighborhood swing club or speakeasy. High Low Middle uses it’s flapper dance beat, fluttering horn section and party orchestra to break out a large smile. My Brightest Diamond’s Shara Worden has not abandoned her search for individuality in this piece though. It is full of My Brightest Diamond sharp edges and unanticipated cues.
Though warm, High Low Middle contains an eerie emotional stance throughout as she sings “Lord help you when you’re growing old / Lord help you when you’re tired and cold”. When you are happy you aren’t aware you are happy, but when you aren’t happy “you know”. So she advises us to… “Keep yourself low / But not too low”.
